St. Callixtus’s Catacombs arose towards the end of the 2nd century, with some private Christian hypogea and a funerary area directly dependent on the Roman church. They take their name from the deacon Callisto I, appointed by Pope Zephyrinus to administer the cemetery itself. Having in turn ascended the papal throne, Pope Callistus I enlarged the funerary complex, which soon became the official one of the Church.
